Digital India: Transforming the Libraries and Society into Knowledge Society

India being at the verge of developed country has taken into consideration the impact of knowledge on society. One of its genuine attempts is to transform India into a digitally empowered society and knowledge economy. The process of digitization involves transforming India into a knowledge hub where every household is digitally literate. Knowledge based society improve human condition and bring a redial change a societal progress. It promotes human right and offers equal, inclusive and universal access to all knowledge creation without barriers. In the same context libraries see their role as enablers of the knowledge society by providing information, e-resources, ICT driven obvious to expect taht digitil libraries will provide new opportunities for innovative educational practices. It is mandatory for today's libraries to facilitate the open distribution of knowledge. Librarians strive to enable the free flow of information. It is therefore necessary to work towards connection and spread of knowledge. The digitization of libraries and the information in its various forms by implementing technological innovations and accelerated ICT has identified factors that help the libraries in transforming them towards building a knowledge society. Some of these factors are exceptional growth of new knowledge, its propagation, distribution, accessibility, availability and globalization of research and e-resources and e-governance. Responding to its multidimensional needs libraries must use digital technologies to innovate their policies, processes, structures and interact with its user communities and institutionalize such innovations over time.
