About this Item
Direct Selling Shoe Manual: A Course in Practical Foot Orthopedics, Scientific Shoe Fitting and Applied Salesmanship by Clarence E. Knapp was published by Knapp Brothers Shoe Manufacturing Corp., Brockton, Massachusetts, in 1940. Not an ex-library copy, this 73-year-old, 181-page, 6" X 9", believed-to-be First Edition, soft-cover offering is in G+ condition. Still in overall very nice, firm physical shape at 73, there is some yellowing of text's pages, mild curling of outer-bottom corners of a smallish run of pages(from front cover section through page 10 of main text), and some modest shelf wear at top and bottom edges of volume's spine. Some underlining, in light red, faded ink is observed under a grouping of five lines on page 37. The cover sections are of thicker stock, are dark green in color, and have a pebble-grained texture/look/feel. From Introduction, ".This practical [manual] of shoe selling technique, in addition to many years of experience in the production, manufacturing, and fitting of shoes, enables me to place in your hands this source of practical information which includes the things you should know in order to successfully and profitably develop an independent shoe business of your own. In the preparation of this course, I have purposely avoided the difficult or technical phases of each subject that are not absolutely essential to practical foot and shoe analyses or the art of scientific fitting and successful salesmanship. I have endeavored to include only the necessary and practical information and methods that you can easily acquire and apply to your work. Information gained from this course will save you many months and even years of experimenting and hard work--it's a shortcut to prosperity and success." This detailed primer tells its reader/s everything they needed to know about the shoe business, at least as far as technology had advanced said business at the time of this volume's 1940 publication, and is certainly a generous slice of Americana in that it provides the formula for being there "first with the most", if its shoes you're looking for, anyway. The manual is presented in three parts: Practical Foot Orthopedics, Scientific Shoe Fitting, and Applied Salesmanship. It is frequented by dozens of black and white diagrams, sketches, and cartoons (featuring, of course, the current best of the available shoe trade humor), said cartoons, at least, the work of one M.T. Elmo. NOTE: Serving as twin Frontispieces, and spanning two adjoining pages, are attractive, black and white drawings of Knapp Brothers Shoe Manufacturing plants/warehouses in Brockton, Massachusetts, Lewiston, Maine, and East Los Angeles, California. This unique offering is really worth seeing, and repeatedly, ESPECIALLY IF you're in the business currently, or were at one time, Reader. Thank you very much!!
