About this Item
Bound in blindstamped brown cloth with spine titles stamped in gilt. Second American edition, stated. 336 pages. With a handwritten gift presentation to Delazon Smith from Henry Clay Dean, dated May 9, 1851, to the front free endpaper; also present is a later note, dated March 27, 1852, stating the book was "Bought at Bro Smith's sale" and signed C. C. Nourse. A scarce example of the signature of Henry Clay Dean, a theologian who was appointed Chaplain of the US Senate in 1855 and wrote a book on the crimes of the Civil War (1868), and whose library was destroyed in a fire at his home in Rebel's Cove, Missouri, sometime after 1871. Dean spent time in Iowa between 1850 and 1855; at some point he and Smith, also a theologian, became friends, and Dean warmly inscribed this book to him. Smith left Iowa in 1852 for Oregon, evidently selling off his library before the move. The cloth shows mild edgewear and rubbing, with some small deterioration at the heel. The upper portions of the covers retain a bit of dampspotting, and the corners are bumped. The upper page corners show a tidemark from page 300 to the end, with no damage to the text. There are spots of foxing throughout, heaviest at the prelims, but never so heavy as to obscure any text. Hinges solid. An uncommon edition that carries the signature of Henry Clay Dean. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Seller Inventory # 124414
