Item description from seller

Boston Med. Surg. J., 36/ 3. - Boston, David Clapp, Wednesday, February 17, 1847, 8°, pp.pp.59-68, fine wrappers. First Edition! "Sir, - James Murphy, a laboring man, aged 56, presented himself in the Hospital of the Home of Correction on the 9th inst., having his left humerus dislocated into the axilla." C. H. Stedman; M. D.; (late physician to the City Institute, S. Boston.) C. H. Stedman of the municipal Boston Lunatic Asylum, whose patients were mostly poor and incurable, wrote: "The patients daily ask for books and newspapers; and such are their importunities at times, that it is painful to be obliged to tell them we have none. Shut up in the halls through the dreary winter-deprived of all means of access to books and papers, . . .-the inmates of this hospital, must, and do, wear out a most tedious existence" (Boston Lunatic Asylum, AR [1846]: 23).
