The first edition of this miscellany of short stories, mottoes and anecdotes, published anonymously in seven volumes from 1834-1847. Volume I & II (1834), Volume III (1835), Volume IV (1837), Volume V (1838), Volume VI & VII (1847). Bound in the original publisher's cloth binding, with original paper spine labels. End papers of Volumes IV-VII renewed. All half titles are present. Volume III with a 12 page publisher"s advertisement bound to the front. Volume VII with a 32 pages of publisher"s advertisements bound to the rear. Volume VI with an errata sheet tipped-in. Volume VII with a coloured frontispiece. Collated, complete. A series of miscellaneous works written by English Romantic poet, Robert Southey. Volume IV includes the first printed appearance of Southey"s rendition of The Story of the Three Bears, known also as Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Southey"s version has become enshrined as one of Britain"s most beloved children"s fairy tales. A notable English Romantic poet, Southey is also remembered for his poem, 'After Blenheim'. Bound in full cloth with paper spine labels. Externally, smart. With some bumping to extremities and head and tail of spines. The odd mark to boards. Discolouration from sunning to spines and spine labels. Chips and rubbing to spine labels. Mottling to boards of vol. VII and VI. Extremities of vol.I- III slightly bowed. Vols. I-V cocked. Splits to cloth of Vol. I at both joints. Hinge of VIII split and strained at front board with tears to paste down, but holding firm. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages bright and clean with the occasional pencil annotation. Good.
