This book contains essays by 51 prisoners; there are bried biographies of each author in the rear. This is a nice clean, tight and unmarked book with no interior or exterior markings, no previous owner names and no bookplates. The dust jacket is price-clipped and there is a tiny tear to the jacket at the top edge at the spine, else it is also in nice condition. ; 8vo, 8"- 9" tall; 349 pages.

This anthology of material by winners of PEN Americas annual prison writing contests provides a polyphonic chorus of rejoinder to our policies of maximum incarceration. The collections prose is honed and direct, with many contributors striking a hypnotic balance between the urgency inherent in writing as survival and the punishingly absurd nature of their circumstances: though their literary imaginations range widely, bodily, theyre going no place. Most at issue is the individual readers openness toward otherwise shunned figures. Several pieces are from longtime death-row inmates, presenting lucid, provocative narratives that dont excuse their youthful brutality. A thick sheaf of entries represent the hapless POWs of the Drug War (often disadvantaged women), serving long sentences for semantic and violence-free crimes. The distribution of fiction, poetry, and essays into 11 topical sections (e.g. Players, Games) allows a textured diversity of excellent pieces, such as Paul Mulryans scorching account of the 11-day Lucasville, Ohio, riot; Jimmy Santiago Bacas poetic reach toward lost family; Dax Xenoss O. Henry-winning fiction, Death of a Duke; and Robert Moriartys droll, harrowing memoir, Pilots in the War on Drugs. Introductory essays by Dead Man Walking author Sister Helen Prejean and SUNY Purchase professor emeritus Chevigny provide a moral chassis; the latters piece charts the prison writing movement as a response to the fluctuations of penal theory between reform and retribution, offering a chilling vision of our current maximum-time, hard-labor model as a machine of social control, devouring ever more persons of color and of the underclass even as the crime rate declines. PEN is unique in that over the last 25 years it has collected and published short stories, poems, and essays written by prisoners across the country. This volume reprints the best of the lot. A few names are familiar, such as former Black Panther Kathy Boudin, but most are unknown. Not of first quality, but certainly of high amateur ranking, these works speak of the monotony of incarceration, the loss of outside contacts, and the longing for freedom. In her introduction, editor Chevigny (literature, SUNY at Purchase) discusses the changing face of prisons she has seen over the years and the therapeutic value of prison writing. Shipping via USPS Media Mail (the least expensive shipping) do not include insurance and are sent at buyer's risk! USPS Ground Advantage does include $100 insurance, but costs a little more. We strive to ship all orders within 2 business days. Shipping costs are based on 8vo size books (about 8"x5") weighing 2.0 pounds. If your book order contains more than one volume or is heavy or oversized, we may contact you to let you know if extra shipping is required. While most Media Mail shipments has proven to be reliable in the continental USA and usually arrives in a timely fashion--in some cases media mail can take 2-3 weeks for delivery--sometimes longer. All of our shipments come with tracking numbers.
**Standard Shipping ** in the USA is via USPS Media Mail or equivalent: $6.30 for the first book & $3.25 each additional book. We will contact you if your parcel requires additional postage.
Priority Shipping in the USA is via USPS Priority Mail or by UPS: $12.95 for the first book if your book will fit in a Flat Rate Mailer, and $20.50 for each additional book (Heavy & oversize parcel charges may apply and we will contact you if additional postage is required).
International Shipping is via USPS Priority Mail or by UPS International: rates start at $42.00 via a Priority Flat Rate Envelope, depending on the destination.
