Down and Out in Paris and London

First American edition. Two very small tears on the edges of two successive leaves, very slightly cocked, very good or better lacking the dust jacket. A presentable copy of the author's first book. As a young man Orwell took a position in the Indian Imperial Police and was particularly struck by the race and class barriers which prevented him from knowing the Burmese community in which he served. Returning to England in 1927, he attempted to appease his guilt by immersing himself in the life of the poor and outcast of Europe. The resulting experiences became the bases for these thinly fictionalized accounts of his days living and working among the most disenfranchised and downtrodden of Europe's cultural centers. A very scarce title.
