Drugs and Sex

Presents comprehensive information to help teenagers cope with the dangers and attractions of sex, especially when combined with drug abuse

Gr 6 Up-Boyd discusses the dilemmas faced by teens and urges them to obtain information and have confidence in their own values. There are extensive descriptions of the effects of sedatives, stimulants, narcotics, and hallucinogens on the body and on the mind. Loss of self-control and coordination, disorganized and fantastic modes of thinking, a surreal feeling of impotence, and possible long-range damage that users may expect are detailed. The author points out that young addicts often trade sex for drugs and drift into prostitution, thus increasing the risk and the spread of STDs including AIDS. Myths, such as, ``I'm more sexy when I'm high'' are refuted. Case histories cited are believable and poignant. In an excellent chapter called ``Positive Alternatives and Resources,'' suggestions are given for ways in which teens can gain control of their lives and make them meaningful. A concise ``Help'' list at the back of the book is actually a help. Boyd's style is forceful and forthright; he says just about all there is to say on the subject and says it well. Full-color and black-and-white photos are appropriate accompaniments to the easy-to-read text. Joann Rodgers's Drugs and Sexual Behavior (Chelsea, 1988) focuses mainly on the negative effects that drugs can have on sexual relationships.-Libby K. White, Schenectady County Public Library, NY
