BEAUTIFUL LEAF FROM A 1425 BOOK OF HOURS; PRAYERS AND DEVOTIONS. The text begins with the historiated "O" in Latin. Illuminated manuscript leaf on Vellum from a Book of Hours in Latin. Utrecht, Netherlands, early 15th century (1425). 36 lines, two lines of inscriptions outside of text. Historiated initials throughout both pages, marking beginnings of prayer phrases and sentences in blue, gold, and red. Extensions and text breaks in the same color. Text resembles Isaiah 12:2-6, followed by Gloria Patri. Text beginning with historiated O, in Latin: Omnipotens sempiterne Deus, da cordibus nostris illam tuam rectitudine semitam, quam beatus loh?nes Baptista in deserto, vox cla[mantis], manus edocuit. Beati Archangeli Michaelis intervention[e], te supplices tu Domine deprecamur, ut quod honore percipiamus contingamus et mente, per Dominum nrm ihc, cum xpm Filium tuum, qui tecum vivit et regnat in unitate Spiritus Sancti, Deus, per omnia saecula. The second page resembles Isaiah 12:2-6, followed by Gloria Patria. This compressed Fine Gothic Textura Quadrata Script, with characteristic bright highlights, was crafted in Utrecht, Netherlands. This book utilizes ink, tempera, and gold on vellum. Books of Hours were the most widely produced books before the advent of printing, offering hourly prayers for Christian families. Blue coloring was rare and available only to the wealthiest, as it was generally derived outside of Europe. Size: 122 x 97 mm.
