An original, rare, Fine copy of this scarce novel (First Edition) by the prolific author and mother of Christabel Gertrude Marshall, campaigner for women's suffrage. Fabulous blue cloth hardback with bright gilt titling, impressed with black, silver and blind-stamped illustration of the gothic Eaglehurst Towers set on a cliff battered by the sea. All edges gilt, standard 8vo. Very minor wear to corner points and spine head and foot. Plain, clean end-papers with no inscription. Half-title with minor spotting to preliminaries. Engraved frontispiece and three other full page illustrations along with many finely engraved vignettes and headers within the text. Firm binding, clean throughout, 224pp. 16pp Catalogue of Partridge-published books to rear. Emma Marshall (nee Martin,1830-1899) wrote many novels of a high moral and religious tone. Emma Marshall wrote a biography of another popular novelist, A.L.O.E. The youngest of her nine daughters, Christabel (1871-1960) was a prominent campaigner for women's suffrage an author and playwright, graduate of Somerville College and 16 years old when her mother published this book. Eaglehurst Towers is a crumbling old mansion somewhere on the north-west coast of England; beset by a raging storm a young woman is washed ashore from a shipwreck, sunk off the headland, Old Nicolas Rock. The author also wrote: Thoughts on Women's Suffrage (1886). Scarce, especially in this Fine condition.20% price reduction now applied.
