Add to basketFirst British edition. Translated from the Swedish by Velma Swanston Howard. Frontispiece portrait of the author by Zorn, with protective tissue guard. Top edge gilt. With a contemporary ownership signature on ffep in purple ink. ***Very good in the publisher's original purple cloth - gilt titles to spine a little dull. Spine slightly faded. Off-setting to endpapers. No dustwrapper. ***Contains the play "Easter" and nine short stories. ***263pp plus 28pp publisher's catalogue at the rear, dated 1913. ***Synopsis of "Easter - The Heyst family have recently been disgraced by an unseen father, in prison for embezzlement. Ellis, the son, and a teacher has recently been plagiarised and publicly snubbed by his best pupil, and another pupil, Benjamin has been taken in as a lodger to repay some of the debt that Ellis's father owes. Eleanora, his sister, has recently returned from the asylum, to which he had committed her, while Lundquist, his father's biggest creditor, lurks in the background, seemingly intent to claim back all he is owed, a threat which could bankrupt the whole family. ***A nice collectable copy of the first British edition, which is scarcer than the US first edition published by Stewart & Kidd Company, Cincinnati in 1912. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.***.
