Told almost entirely in epistolary form, "The Human Chair" is the perfect encapsulation of everything that is great about Rampo's literary works: the invasion of polite and mainstream society by elements of disorder, "deviant" sexual pleasure, abnormal and obsessive criminal behavior, and the implication of the protagonist ? and through them, the reader ? in the erotic or grotesque development of the story until its gooseflesh-raising conclusion.
