7.5 x 4.5", later blindstamped full leather, gilt ruled raised bands, black leather spine label with gilt lettering, edges gilt dec, marbled endpapers, vi, 408. Covers worn, rubbed, scuffed/scrape, spine sunned, front outer hinge cracked, corners bumped and worn, scattered foxing/spotting else very good condition, textblock tight. Ink stamp on ffep "Fannie L. Munson" who has also written her name on the title page, additionally there is a very faint pencil inscription on the first blank page "To F. Munson From R.L. Trice (sp?) Palmyra, New York October 14, 1846". Comes with a photocopy of the errata slip (original not present) and all twelve points match. Elizabeth Stryker Ricord opened the Geneva Female Seminary in 1829. The seminary was geared toward offering an equal or better education than men received. Her purpose was to educate the women to be teachers and offered a more rigorous curriculum than other schools for women. Classes included mental and moral philosophy, natural philosophy, astronomy, geology. Her book, "Elements Of Philosophy" was the first psychology textbook written by a women and was written expressly for female students. From the preface: "This volume.in the form of Lectures, addressed to pupils in a Female Seminary.As a Teacher, the Author felt the necessity of a work on this important branch of science, adapted to the introduction of her own sex.in making a practical application of the leading facts of Mental Philosophy".
