Kobus, the son of a miller, impression- able, keenly alive to form and colour, persuades his father to apprentice him to Krul, a master painter of Haarlem. The studio life is fully described. Dirk, a vagabond musician, and Siska the model, ?play their part in the young man?s experiences. Love, adventure, disillusion, debauchery, violent death and desertion combine to lead Kobus back to his father, the mill, and the peace of the countryside. He paints with the ardour of a cleansed spirit, is recognised as an artist, and woos and wins a lovely spring-like girl. The author's love of the Dutch school inspires him throughout the tale.
