About this Item
First impression of the true first edition of the author's elusive fourth published novel, with striking jacket design by Lacey Everitt. ***A very good copy in black boards with silver and deep pink titles to the spine. The boards are generally clean, with just a few light sporadic foxing marks. Top edge of spine very slightly creased. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Page block edges clean, with light foxing to the top edge. Please note also that a very small section of the top edge of the page block is creased, affecting a few top edges of the pages (please see scans). Internally also very good with no inscriptions. No creases or tears, other than the aforementioned top edge creases. ***In a near fine colour illustrated dustwrapper, which has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of 18s net. The dustwrapper is complete with no chips or tears - just a very small closed tear to the top edge of the spine. Extremities and corners very slightly rubbed and creased. Back of dustwrapper very lightly discoloured (being a white background). Bright pink colour to the front panel and spine completely unfaded. Dustwrapper bright. ***224 pages. 204mm x 136mm. ***'Stanley Middleton FRSL (1 August 1919 - 25 July 2009) was a British novelist. He was born in Bulwell, Nottinghamshire, in 1919 and educated at High Pavement School, Stanley Road, Nottingham, and later at University College Nottingham. Middleton started writing while at university and in 1958 published his first novel "A Short Answer". Alongside his work as an author, he taught English at High Pavement Grammar School for many years. In 1974, his novel "Holiday" won the Booker Prize. In 2008, "Her Three Wise Men" was published, this being his 44th novel, and the last to be published during his lifetime.' (Wiki) ***'"'The Just Exchange" is an astonishingly moving novel about a dying marriage and one that is slowly coming alive. ---Stanley Middleton's last novel "A Serious Woman", has been described as 'exceptional', 'subtle', 'impressive'. "The Just Exchange" is all these things and more. A really remarkable novel.'' ***'If one were to look for a latter-day E. M. Forster I can think of no more promising candidate than Stanley Middleton.' - Robin Denniston in Time and Tide (About "A Serious Woman") (Quote and review quote taken from the front flap and back panel of dustwrapper respectively) ***First impression of the true first edition of the author's scarce fourth novel, in its original dustwrapper. One of Stanley Middleton?s early novels and now scarce (Most copies of the early books went to lending libraries and have now been discarded). The book and dustwrapper would both be described as near fine, except for the small abrasion creasing to the page block mentioned above. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. ***.
