Bull's experiments on fuels for domestic heating follows a long American tradition into home heating, most notably led by Count Rumford. Brooke Hindl in Technology in early America cites Bull's book "announced as scientific in character and practical in objective" as provoking "much controversary." The frontispiece shows the apparatus used by Bull in his experiments on fuel. Bull's experiments heavily favored the use of anthracite coal. Ex-library stamps on plate and title page; endpapers brittle, respined, a few marginal lines and checks.
