A first edition of a much reprinted book. From Lannon W. Mintz, The Trail; no. 392: "This is a reprint of the article as it first appeared in the Riddle Enterprise [newspaper]. Riddle emigrated to Oregon in 1851 from Springfield, Illinois." George W. Riddle (1839-1927) was a pioneer who served in the military during the Civil War. He also won election for Douglas County judge and served in the Oregon legislature several terms. His younger brother, John B. Riddle, founded the town of Riddle, OR in 1893. In this autobiography, George Riddle gives an account his pioneer trip from Springfield to Oregon when he was a boy, from the terrain of the various landscapes to his encounters with various people along the way. In much of the book, Riddle focuses on conflicts with Native American tribes but also recounts how not all interactions with them were negative.
