Item description from seller

Cynthia Taft Morris's copy of the First Edition, with her signature dated 1963. xxviii, 276 pp. Original cloth. Near Fine, in very good+ dust jacket. Jan Tinbergen: Bank of Sweden Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel, 1969 (shared with Ragnar Frisch), 'for having developed and applied dynamic models for the analysis of economic processes.' 'On the Theory of Economic Policy (1952) and Centralization and Decentralization in Economic Policy (1954) were capped by Economic Policy: Principles and Design [1956, offered here] in which he advanced the thesis that a government cannot achieve a set of quantitative targets for specific economic variables (such as full employment, a stable price level, and balance of payments equilibrium) unless it enjoys an equal number of quantitative policy instruments (such as the level of government expenditure, the level of taxes, and the rate of growth of the money supply). The use of this framework was illustrated by a series of examples of actual problems facing the Dutch economy, which served to drive home its practical import. Economic Policy soon became one of Tinbergen's most widely read books and its message is now common parlance among policy-makers everywhere' (Mark Blaug, Great Economists Since Keynes, p. 245). Morris and Irma Adelman co-wrote Society, Politics & Economic Development: A Quantitative Approach (1967) and Economic Growth and Social Equity in Developing Countries (1973), and developed the Adelman-Morris Model. The 1967 book is one of the references Tinbergen gave in his Nobel Lecture, 'The Use of Models: Experience and prospects'.…
