Scarce first edition of the standard biography of Ruffin, a southern planter noted as an early proponent of soil conservation, but more noted as a radical early secessionist, advocate for slavery and states' rights, and firer of the first shot on Fort Sumter - at the age of 67- beginning the Civil War. Craven was a well-regarded historian known for his revisionist views of the cause of the Civil war; he has recently fallen into disfavor. Hardcover, as pictured; first printing, with (1) on last page. Book shows some wear, tiny stains & light smudging, pages lightly tanned; no jacket.
