This book continues to advocate for the informed observation and description of students without subjecting children to eligibility formulas and labels. In this second edition, I have updated and enriched many of the descriptions of the observable phenomena, revealing scenarios that can be witnessed daily within a classroom and at home. I have also added to the therapeutic recommendations that emerge naturally from the discovery of the highly specific phenomena that stand in the way of learning. "Educational Care" remains based on the firmly held conviction that the best educational care takes place when parents & educators form a coalition on behalf of the student, which is why the management techniques in this book are framed both for parents and schools. I also sustain the very strong emphasis on demystification, the belief that kids can deal with a problem when they have a clear & highly specific understanding of what it is & when they can learn the technical terms needed to think & talk about their learning issues. I hope that this book can inspire caring adults to help each child to discover how to use his or her unique"wiring" in niches that are filling and productive for him or her. It is my deep hope that this edition will continue to nurture the belief that education is at its best when it is a form of care, a sensitive and sensible process that cares for and about developing minds. The knowledge, approach, & empowerment that infuses these pages will hopefully mobilize & equip us to establish & implement humane educational policies and practices. In this way, what we have learned about successful learning will help all children find success in learning.
