London: Chapman & Hall, 1870. 8vo, (viii), 190 pp. Frontispiece portrait of Dickens by J.H. Baker and 13 illustrations by Samuel Luke Fildes, including a vignette title page. Half red morocco, upper wrapper of part II bound in. Corners and backstrip worn with some splits at hinges, contents a little foxed but complete. Very good. ? First edition of Dickens last novel. Edwin Drood appeared originally in six monthly parts from April-September 1870. When Dickens died of a stroke on June 9, 1870, he left no clue as to how the story ended. Since then many have tried to write a satisfactory resolution to the mystery. Smith I, 16 with all but the last of his noted internal flaws (on p.177 the last letter of "girl" is perfectly printed).
