Very good condition overall. A history of the British interventions in Egypt and the Sudan in the late nineteenth century to confront an uprising against the Egyptian Khedivate led by Muhammed Ahmad bin Abd Allah who had proclaimed himself the Mahdi (the guided one) of Islam. The uprising had several initial successes, including overcoming British General Gordon at the siege of Khartoum in 1885. The Sudanese subsequently launched several campaigns against Emin Pasha, the Governor of the Egyptian state of equatorial, as well as the neighbouring Congo Free State and the Ethiopian Empire. Ultimately, however, in 1899 (well after the publication of this book) British forces under the command of Lord Kitchener were able to reassert Egyptian claims to the Sudan in which Britain had de facto control. This continued until Sudanese independence in 1956. Seller Inventory # 000033
