FAIR; FIRST EDITION; Hard cover with original binding; EX-LIBRARY with the usual stamps and pocket (see photos); the pages inside are clean except for a few minor fountain pen notations (they look like they are in the hand of Stringham); the binding is fragile, cracked (near separated) and worn; the covers are worn with scotch tape along the spine edges; the spine gold lettering is very good; SIGNED ON THE INSIDE TOP COVER (his initials appear elsewhere also) BY WASHINGTON IRVING STRINGHAM (1847-1909, PROFESSOR OF MATHEMATICS and the first to denote ln(x) to represent the natural logarithm; also inside is a page of notes on mathematics written by him (see photo); this is the only book that Arthur Cayley ever wrote and is extremely rear in first edition; Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
