Alexander Cumming was a well-respected 18th century watchmaker. The first essay ? An Essay Towards the Improvement of Clock-work ? deals with pendulum design including temperature compensation, the use of oil and the design of recoil and deadbeat escapements. The second essay ? An Essay Towards the Improvement of Watch-work ? deals with the design of watch main springs, balances and balance springs. A very good copy, first two pages slightly foxed, other pages in very clean condition, the plates in even better condition.
