3 volumes 8vo, pp xii, 433: 481: 459, [49, index], bound in contemporary sheep backed marbled boards, rubbed and chipped to the spine ends, the joints cracked with some internally strengethened, some abrasions and flaking to surface leather of spines, but holding together, internally with light dust foxing to endpapers and first and last leaves, else tight and clean throughout, a good working set in original state, SECOND EDITION; comparision with the pagination of the three volume first edition of the previous year indicates how much revision and expansion Kames had made during a short space of time, as set out by him in his preliminary note 'The author giving an attentive ear to every censure.' A significant work of the Scottish Englightenment, berated by Johnson, yet of lasting significance both sides of the Atlantic. This second, and much enlarged, edition is somewhat rare than the first and certainly of textual importance. The Spetchley Park copy, with Robert Berkeley's bookplates.
