1875. Presumed first American edition in two volumes (text and plates). li, 404pp. plus a tipped-in advertisement for another work; [ii], 32 plates. Augustus Jay Du Bois (1849-1915) was Professot of Civiul and Mechanical Engineering at Lehigh University, Pennsylvania. This work on graphical statisitcs and their aplpication to framed structures contains numerous examples of cranes, bridges, roof and suspension trusses, braced and stone arches, pivot and draw spans, continuous girders, &c., together with the best methods of calculations, and containing also new and practical formulae for the pivot or draw span, braced arch, continuous girders, etc. The first volumex contains the text and examples, and the second volume 32 double-page plates. The first (text) volume is bound in later (probably late 20th C.) black cloth covered boards with black titling on the spine. The volume containing the plates is bound in the original dark brown cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The case of the text volume is in very good condition with light shelf wear on the boards and a small dent on the top of the spine. The text volume has shelf wear with some soiling to the boards and the corners are bumped with some damage and loss to the cloth around the corner tips. About 1/4" is missing from the bottom of the spine and up to about 3/8" is missing from the top of the spine. The contents of the text volume are tight and clean although many of the pages, including the title-page, suffer from scattered light foxing. The volume containing the plates is tight and the plates are clean and free from foxing apart from a few light marks and some light soiling on the title page.
