Half leather binding, with gilt titles and volume numbers to red and green labels, marbled paper and calf leather covered boards, all page edges darkened and tanned, ink and pencil inscribed end papers, tanned and foxed throughout, text block tight.
Ink marks to a few pages, ink drawings and inscriptions to the end papers, misfolded plates, marginal closed tear and tear to the gutter of one of the plates of Vol I.
Ink ownership inscriptions of Edward Goulboun, midshipman aboard the HMS Latona with numerous ink and pencil drawings of ships to endpapers and ink or pencil notes and drawings to Vol II in the text and margins.
The HMS Latona served during the American Revolutionary War, the French Revolutionary War and the Napoleonic Wars. Goulboun has sketched the ship on numerous occasions, including one drawing detailing his position at the top of a masthead.
LACKING the 2 circular moving plates to Vol II (part of one of the plates present. Stain across the page of Tactics Plate V, damp stained to the bottom third of pages of half of Vol II.
