Synopsis

In this research note, the author presents a state of the art account of stability of viscoelastic fluids, defined by the fading memory hypotheses of Coleman and Noll. These fluids are treated in their generality but, on two occasions, special types of fading memory fluids are introduced. However, no attempt is made to treat the stability problem within the generality of fluids described and defined by Noll as simple, because the indiscriminate comparison of results across this range has had undesirable consequences. The discussion centres on three basic the derivation of correct equations for the linearized stability of viscometric flow, the stability, and asymptotic stability of the rest state, and the stability of steady simple shear. Thus the approach seeks to unite the isolationist purely analytical treatment with mechanical understanding.
