Sydney, Angus and Robertson Publishers, 1986 (first edition). Large quarto, xii, 1083 pages with more than 1100 line illustrations by the author. Papered boards lightly rubbed at the extremities; edges lightly marked; text paper a little tanned (as ever); ownership inkstamp on the front free endpaper; an excellent copy with the excellent dustwrapper. Every significant aspect of over 11,000 plants is covered in detail: its botanical and common names, family classification, place of origin, natural habitat, preferred soil and position, drought and frost reactions, plant type, height and spread, descriptions of its parts, flowering times, propagation methods, and, where relevant, hints on cultivation and care, special uses, poison warnings, and the history of the legends involving the plant. The book warrants a permanent place on the reference shelf. Seller Inventory # 142008
Title: Encyclopaedia Botanica. The Essential ...
Publisher: Angus and Robertson Publishers, Sydney
Publication Date: 1986
Binding: Hardcover
Condition: Very Good
Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good
Edition: First Edition.
Seller: Larsen Books, Exeter, NSW, Australia
Second edition (the same as the first in 1986 by A&R, just slightly larger in format). Hardcover. Thick quarto-size (approximately 1100 pages). Very good in very good dustjacket. A massive reference with good descriptions and b/w sketches of the plants, both by the author. Frances (Fran) Bodkin, born in 1937, is an Australian botanist and D'harawal elder who helped establish the Australian Botanic Garden at Mount Annan, near Sydney, at a former meeting site of the local Indigenous people. This fine encyclopaedia used to be reasonably common, but is now becoming scarce, simply because of demand and the fact that it doesn't seem to have been reprinted later than the early 1990s. A heavy book which will cost considerably more to send overseas, than any default postage rate noted. Seller Inventory # 37771
