Engaging the Rewired Brain Quick Reference Guide

Research has shown that as children interact daily with technology, their brains are being molded and changed; in short, technology is rewiring children's brains. How does this affect learning, and how should teachers redesign their instructional practice accordingly?

In this four-page quick reference guide, educational neuroscience author Dr. David A. Sousa gives teachers research-based strategies they can use during instruction to address the cerebral areas where rewiring occurs — attention systems, memory networks, thinking processes, and social skills. Dr. Sousa pulls key points from his award-winning book Engaging the Rewired Brain to help teachers shift their classrooms from teacher-centered to student-centered by using techniques such as project-based learning, differentiation, and flipped classrooms. Teachers will also learn how to incorporate humor, games and technological tools to motivate and engage digital natives all in an illustrated, easy-to-use format that makes it a breeze for teachers to recall the information they need in the midst of instruction.

Dr. David A. Sousa is an international educational consultant and author of more than a dozen books that suggest ways that educators and parents can translate current brain research into strategies to improve learning. A member of the Cognitive Neuroscience Society, he has conducted workshops in hundreds of school districts on brain research, instructional skills, and science education at the pre-K-12 and university levels. He has made presentations to more than 200,000 educators at national conventions of educational organizations and to regional and local school districts across the US, Canada, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and Asia.
