A remarkably well-preserved first edition of this foundational text, developed in the wake of the 1972 Buffalo Creek disaster. This volume established the first formal engineering standards for coal refuse embankments and impoundments in the United States. Condition: Very Good Edition: Apparent first edition from 1975, prepared by E. D'appolonia Consulting Engineers for MESA. The cloth boards show good color with only minor shelf wear. The binding remains strong, though the spine is slightly loose as is common with a technical volume of this weight (approx. 700pp). Vibrant gold lettering on cover and spine. Interior pages are clean, bright, and completely unmarked by notes or highlighting. Provenance: Features a professional engineering stamp on the front paste-down paper and an engineering embossment on the bottom of the title page, overlapping the consultant's credits - adding a layer of authentic industrial history. Key Technical Content: Extensive illustrations, fold-outs, and data tables covering geotechnical investigations, hydrologic and hydraulic design, and site configuration for coal mine waste.
