First edition in English. Isaac Caus's text and illustrations were adapted from his uncle or father Salomon de Caus's Les raisons des forces mouvantes avec diverses machines (Frankfurt 1615), an important work for the development of technology and particularly that of the steam engine. Isaac de Caus was a pioneer in the construction of life-sized automata, several of which are illustrated here. The present treatise also includes descriptions of a fire engine, various pumps, several types of musical organs, and a sluice. He collaborated with Inigo Jones on the design of Wilton House and its gardens. Last copy at auction ours, before that 1998 Christies. Rare, no copy in the trade. Not in Harvard or Yale, Stanford.

Store description
Making the impossible possible. That is what I love about the antiquarian book trade. Books have had to endure the ravages of time, from mere careless handling to the burning pyres of Savonarola and modern war. Someone may ask me for a 15th century book on witchcraft or express interest in a biblical manuscript, and I have to seek out these treasures from the flea markets of Paris and alleys of Istanbul to New York Fifth Avenue apartments and the ritzy auction rooms of London.
