About this Item
Condition of prints varies from fair to very good, the majority of the prints are good or better. Some prints have considerable fading, moderate browning, and spots of foxing. Other prints are very good and clean. The thick card album leaves themselves have heavy patchy foxing throughout the album. The album has heavy wear and rubbing to the leather spine and corners, with abrasions and some loss of leather. 3/8" missing to leather at head and tail of spine.; No date, c1890s. Photograph album, titled in gilt on front board "ENGLISH LAKES". 57 albumen photographic prints, varying in size. Scenes in the Lake District of north west of England. The larger prints are about mostly about 8" x 6". Some prints are rectangular, some are oval, or with one curved edge. There are 25 album leaves, with photographs mounted on both sides, mostly one print on each page, but a few pages with 2 or 3 smaller sized prints. The dimensions of the album leaves are oblong 365 x 256mm (14 1/2" x 10"). Most of the prints have a short one or two word description of the location in autograph pen below the print. Some of the prints also have a location and a number in white on the corner of the print itself, as developed. One of my favourite prints in the album is "3970 Ambleside Mill," which shows water falling over a weir surrounded by stone buildings. The named locations of the prints in the album (possible with some spelling errors from my interpretation of the handwriting) are: 6123 Windermere; Windemere; Windermere (x 2); Skelwith Bridge; On the Rothay, Ambleside; Ambleside; Fairfield from Fox Row; 3975 Stock Ghyll Force, Ambleside; Brathay Chapel, Ambleside; 3970 Ambleside Mill; 1686 Ambleside; Rydal Water; Fairfield, Ambleside; Rydal Water (x 2); 3617 Poet's Seat, Rydal; Rydal Church; Rydal Water; Rydal Water; Rydal Water; Rydal Mount; Kirkstone Pass; 3957 Wishing Gate, Grasmere; 8985 Grasmere; Grasmere; Prince of Wales Hotel, Grasmere; Scandale Beck; Skelwith Force & Longdale Pikes; Langdale; 1700 Langdale; Thirlmere; Longbrigg Dam, Windermere; Thirlmere; Thirlmere; Thirlmere; Grimmockwater; Windermere; Keswick & Skiddaw; Derwentwater; Derwentwater; Druid Circle, Keswick; 482 Bowder Stone, Borrowdale; Honister Pass; Honnister Cray; Buttermere; Ullswater; Stybarrow Cray, Ullswater; Ullswater; 6790 Coniston Head; Coniston; Wastwater; The Screes, Wastwater; Leven's Hall; Newby Bridge; Dalgarth Force; Kent Force, Kendal.
