The first volume won the 1967 U.S. National Book Award in History and Biography. It has been argued that with The Enlightenment, Gay first formulated the interpretation that the Enlightenment brought political modernization to the West, in terms of introducing democratic values and institutions and the creation of modern, liberal democracies. Gay elaborated on the subject in The Enlightenment; a Comprehensive Anthology published by Simon & Schuster in 1973. Every effort is made to ship all books and other items within 24 hours.
