Item description from seller

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1933. First Edition, First Printing, with the Scribner's “A” present on the copyright page, identifying the first printing. Original publisher's decorative cloth binding with striking tropical design in green, black, white/silver tones extending across the front board and spine. Cover artwork/design by Roger Duvoisin. 458 pages. A novel by American author Struthers Burt set against a Caribbean island background, combining romance, social observation, satire, and the cultural tensions surrounding American visitors and island society. This copy bears a “PERSONAL LIBRARY / COLEMAN W. ROBERTS” ownership stamp on the front endpaper, providing an interesting provenance element. No additional significance is attributed to the ownership without further documentation. The book is dedicated “To Arthur H. Scribner / who belonged to / the great tradition of publishing / 1859–1932.” Condition: Very Good overall. Original decorative boards remain attractive, with the pictorial tropical design clearly visible. Light age-related wear and handling to boards and extremities. Spine design remains present and legible. Interior shows age toning/browning consistent with a 1933 publication, including some heavier toning visible toward page margins. Binding appears sound from the photographs. Personal-library ownership stamp as noted. No dust jacket. Please examine photographs, which form an important part of the condition description. An appealing example of the true first printing, particularly desirable for its distinctive Roger Duvoisin-designed pictorial binding. Edition Notes First edition, first printing. The Scribner's “A” is present on the copyright page. Later 1933 printings are known without the “A.”. …

Store description

Welcome to The Hidden History of Books, where every volume has a story waiting to be rediscovered. As a retired librarian with a background in scholarly research and book provenance, I specialize in rare books and first editions that span all genres — from the overlooked and obscure to the culturally iconic. My inventory is carefully sourced from estate sales and private collections, with a focus on books that carry the quiet weight of time, ownership, and intellectual legacy. I believe a book’s value lies not just in its content or rarity, but in the lives it has touched along the way — authors, owners, annotators, and collectors. That belief informs everything I do. You can count on: Conservative grading — no surprises, no exaggerations. I highlight flaws openly and describe condition with care. Detailed listings with a focus on historical and bibliographic context when available. Fast, safe shipping using USPS Media Mail and secure packaging to protect your purchase. Whether you’re a collector, a scholar, or a fellow lover of forgotten shelves, I invite you to browse the catalog and uncover the hidden histories that live between the covers.…
