This text concentrates on the environmental problems of man's interaction with water and its effects on the environment. Water is a unique resource, since we need a rather pure source for our use, and then we must return it to the environment in a condition which will not cause a severe detrimental impact. Most other resources need not be so pure for our use or are merely consumed and not returned to the environment. In addition, water is such an important consideration for other civil engineering disciplines such as soils, oceans, hydraulics, and structural engineering. In many cases, this material may be a useful reference when the students enter practice-environmental, or otherwise. The material in this text proceed from very general considerations to specific topics utilized in environmental engineering. The prerequisites include two terms of chemistry and physics and four terms of math. It is intended to provide basic information for those students who will not continue on in Environmental Engineering, as well as to provide the specific technical information to those students who want to specialize in this area.
