C est, avec ceux de Sénèque et de Marc Aurèle, l 'un des principaux textes de la doctrine stoïcienne qui nous soit parvenu. Le Cebetis Tabula est une oeuvre attribuée au philosophe Cebes, élève de Socrates. Dialogue entre 2 visiteurs et un vieil homme autour d une peinture d un ancien temple évoquant les tentations et dangers de la vie humaine. Il en ressort que la seule voie vers le bonheur passe par l éducation et une conduite vertueuse. Ce texte, aujourd hui oublié, était fréquemment utilisé dans des sermons jusqu au 18ème siècle. Jean Schweighæuser (Strasbourg 1742-1830) est un philologue et helléniste. Professeur, membre de l'Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres, il est l'auteur d'éditions critiques des uvres d'Épictète, d'Hérodote, de Polybe, d'Appien et de Sophocle.
