The vanishingly scarce first US edition of this compilation of the religious works of English evangelical Anglican cleric and slavery abolitionist John Newton, best known for authoring the hymn 'Amazing Grace'.This posthumously published work includes Newton's 'Apologia', alongside several essays on 'modern characters', 'religious affections, and 'on hearing sermons'.Library bookplates of the General Theological Seminary to pastedowns, with stamps to verso of title page. Contemporary inscriptions to title page head, dated 1827. In a quarter morocco binding with marbled paper covered boards. Front board detached, but present. Rear joint starting, with board firmly held. Bookplate to front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages significantly age toned due to paper type, with spotting and handling marks throughout. Inscription to title page head, library markings to title page verso. Good Only.
