First illustrated edition published by Jonathan Cape in 1923. Originally published anonymously by Trubner & Co in 1872. This edition includes the prefaces to the first edition and second editions, both published in 1872 and also the revised edition published in 1901. Illustrated throughout by Robert Gibbings. The spine is faded with some fraying at the top and bottom and the title panel is a little rubbed and has a small chip out of its bottom edge. The front panel has a little fading along the top edge and the rear panel has fading along the top and right edges and also some surface marking and scratching. There is a little rubbing to the edges of the boards and some bumping to the corners. The page edges are a little browned. There is some browning to the endpapers and the adacent pages and a few spots here and there through the book. The binding is a little slack at the front of the book and page 13 is partially loosened but all the other pages seem secure. No jacket. First printing of this edition.
