Very rare first edition of 1873, in the original binding of tan cloth with gilt title on the spine and gilt title plus gilt drawing of Vesuvius erupting on the front. 148 pages all checked and present. 8 plates present, including one folding, as called for, but there appears to be an original binder's error in that there is no plate VA but there are 2 copies of plate V11A. Text in very good, tight, clean condition, with only a little very light browning/foxing of the title page. The binding is in very good, tight condition, with slight fading in places.
