With engraved frontispiece. Lacks map. French translation of Perry's "State of Russia, under the present Czar." Captain John Perry arrived in Russia in 1698, at the request of the Czar Peter. Perry was a civil engineer who was part of Peter's attempts to modernize Russia. His narrative of the fourteen years he spent in Russia provides a first-hand account of Peter's court, the Turkish war of 1711, and Perry's difficulties in the country (Peter demanded work but refused to pay Perry).
