First edition. Octavo. xv, 369pp. Gilt-stamped blue cloth, topedge gilt. Ex-library stamp and spine label, owner name (S.J. Baker M.D.) penned on front fly, gutter cracked, spine cocked, about very good. Sara Josephine Baker, M.D. was known for her contributions to public health specifically to the New York immigrant community. She helped to track down Mary Mallon also known as "Typhoid Mary". She became the first woman to be a professional representative to the League of Nations and she wrote four books and an autobiography. Most of Baker's personal papers were destroyed making this a rare find. Inscribed (not Signed) on the front fly: "With the compliments of the Author.".
