viii+139 pages with 17 plates, maps, figures, appendices and bibliography. Quarto (10 1/4" x 7") bound original publisher's wrappers. University of California Press, Publications in American Archaeology and Ethnology, volume 42, number 1. First edition. This monograph represents the results of three months field work in 1933. In spite of the relatively short period the author has gathered together a great deal of material on a Mexican tribe previously only sketchily known. The Mixe are numerically the largest linguistic group of Veracruz. They live in the mountainous region to the northeast of Oaxaca City. Beals' monograph is based primarily on the community of Ayutla, supplemented by visits to most of the other western towns. Condition: Lacks spine, edge chipped, previous owner's stamp on front wrapper else a good copy.
