Full Title: An Etymological Dictionary of the Scottish language: illustrating the words in their different significations by examples from ancient and modern writers; shewing their affinity to those of other languages, and especially the northern . and elucidating national rites, customs, and institutions . to which is prefixed, a dissertation of the origin of the Scottish language. Vol. I has a 46p "Dissertation on the Origin of the Scots Language"; the dictionary is unpaginated. Both volumes of the Dictionary was published in 1808 and the Supplements in 1825. All first editions, clean and tight. The volumes have all been uniformly respined using the original leather boards with new endpapers, gilt titling and labels. Original labels from the Minto Library (Edinburgh) have been placed on the front pastedown of the new endpapers of the two volumes of the Dictionary only. No other marks or signatures or library evidence. A superb collectable or presentable set - appears little used. Very heavy - will require extra postage for overseas at cost.
