Illustrated throughout with over 100 text woodcut engravings and plates, both full page and in text, of Victorian Europe. First edition of engravings-illustrated travelogue through Great Britain, Norway, Rome, France, Spain, German Empire, and more, in 1888. Europe Illustrated is one of the more ambitious 19th-century pictorial travel volumes produced for the American market, notable for its finely rendered woodcut engravings of major European cities, landscapes, monuments, and architectural treasures. Aldine?s editions were printed in relatively limited numbers and were prized as display books for parlors and libraries. Today, copies retaining their original gilt-decorated cloth bindings and clean impressions of the engravings are increasingly scarce.
