A good copy of this very scarce work in contemporary binding. Although it is titled Part 1, no further part was published. Previously owned by Henry Broughton Hogg (1846-1923) with his decorative bookplate on the front pastedown endpaper. Broughton Hogg was a British amateur arachnologist and authored a number of papers on the subject. Thorell ( Tord Tamolan Teodor Thorell - 1830-1901) was an eminent Swedish arachnologist, responsible for identifying and naming many spider species. The binding has cobbled cloth sides and the leather spine has been rebacked using matching cloth. It is clean and sound with some general scuffing to the leather spine which had loss to the ends. The spine has gilt titles. There is light marking and scuffing around the board edges and both boards have bumps to the bottom corners. The endpapers look to be newer. Contents: title dated 1869-1870, review of literature pp i-xxiv; text pp 1-235 with one plain plate; index and errata pp 236-242. It is very clean internally. The paper is lightly toned and some pages have darker toning around the edges. The title has an old repair to the side and there is a small pinprick indentation in the side margin starting with the title and finally disappearing at p 27. There is a small repaired side edge tear to leaf 41/42 and a scholarly ink note on p 140.
