Baptist missionary activities in Indonesia began in earnest during the early 1950s, following the country's independence from Dutch colonial rule in 1945. Influenced by the closure of Baptist missions in China due to the communist takeover in 1948, Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) leaders redirected efforts to Indonesia, conducting surveys as early as January 1950. Three key SBC missionaries—William B. Johnson, Stockwell B. Sears, and Charles P. Cowherd—arrived on December 24, 1951, and obtained formal permission from the Indonesian Department of Religious Affairs to establish Baptist work on February 25, 1952.
