Welcome to the Well World: a construct of an ancient defunct race known as the Markovians. The Well World acts both as the controller of and the gateway to 1560 worlds created by the Markovians at the end of their time. Gilgam Zinder finally discovers the secret to the Markovian Well World but is then forced by the evil politician and drug dealer, Antor Trelig, to develop a computer that can control the artificial construct. Mavra Chang is a freighter pilot hired to rescue Zinder?s daughter, who has been kidnapped by Trelig, and to save the worlds populating the construct from Trelig?s malicious plans. In the process, Obie, the self?aware computer, accidentally causes a whole world to be automatically transported around the Well World, causing Mavra?s ship to crash on a ?non-tech? hex-world. As inhabitants of surrounding hex-worlds start to realize what is going on, they scramble to collect the pieces of the scattered ship in the hope of escaping the planet, resulting in a chaotic war between various races that might lead to the destruction of the Well World itself. Synopsis

Antor Trellig, head of a ruthless interstellar syndicate, had seized a super computer with godlike powers, which could make him omnipotent. The Council offered master criminal Mavra Chang any reward if she stopped Trellig - and horrible, lingering death if she failed. But neither Trellig nor Mavra had taken the Well World into consideration. Built by the ancient Markovians, the Well World controlled the design of the cosmos. When the opponents were drawn across space to the mysterious planet, they found themselves in new alien bodies, and in the middle of a battle where strange races fought desperately, with the control of all the Universe as the prize.

About the Author

JACK L. CHALKER (1944-2005) was born in Baltimore, Maryland. While still in high school, he began writing for the amateur science fiction press, and in 1960 he launched the Hugo-nominated amateur magazine Mirage. A year later he founded Mirage Press, which grew into a major specialty publisher of nonfiction and reference books on science fiction and fantasy. His first novel, A Jungle of Stars, was published in 1976, and he became a full-time novelist two years later with the major popular success of Midnight at the Well of Souls. He was also a noted speaker on science fiction and fantasy at numerous colleges and universities and at the Smithsonian Institute. His awards include the Daedalus Award (1983), the Gold Medal of the West Coast Review of Books (1984), Skylark Award (1980), the Hamilton-Brackett Memorial Award (1979). He was a nominee for the John W. Campbell Award twice and for the Hugo Award twice. He was posthumously awarded the Phoenix Award of the Southern Fandom Confederation (2005).
