The very scarce first edition of Henry Neville Hutchinson's illustrated work of palaeontology. A very scarce first edition.Illustrated with a frontispiece and twenty-three further plates, one of which is detached and loosely inserted. Collated, complete.These illustrations are the work of J. Smith and others.The author states in his preface 'the object of this book is to describe some of the larger and more monstrous forms of the past - the lost creations of the old world; to clothe their dry bones with flesh'.With the bookplate of Alfred James Copeland, and the card of Lieut. Colonel Copeland to the front pastedown. With the illustrated bookplate of A.D. Passmore to the front free endpaper, alongside his ink stamp.Hutchinson was an Anglican clergyman and, during the 1890s, a leading writer of popular books on geology, palaeontology, evolution and anthropology. In a half calf binding, with marbled paper covered boards. Significant rubbing to back strip head and tail, joints, and board perimeters. Joint heads and tails starting, with boards generally firmly held. Bookplates to front pastedown and front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright, with spotting to perimeters.
