The very scarce first edition of Henry Neville Hutchinson's illustrated work of palaeontology. A very scarce first edition.Illustrated with a frontispiece and twenty-three further plates, one of which is detached and loosely inserted. Collated, complete.These illustrations are the work of J. Smith and others.The author states in his preface 'the object of this book is to describe some of the larger and more monstrous forms of the past - the lost creations of the old world; to clothe their dry bones with flesh'.With the bookplate of Alfred James Copeland, and the card of Lieut. Colonel Copeland to the front pastedown. With the illustrated bookplate of A.D. Passmore to the front free endpaper, alongside his ink stamp.Hutchinson was an Anglican clergyman and, during the 1890s, a leading writer of popular books on geology, palaeontology, evolution and anthropology. In a half calf binding, with marbled paper covered boards. Significant rubbing to back strip head and tail, joints, and board perimeters. Joint heads and tails starting, with boards generally firmly held. Bookplates to front pastedown and front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright, with spotting to perimeters. Fifth edition hard back binding in publisher's original nutmeg cloth covered boards, blocked and lettered back, black vignette to the front board. 8vo. 8'' x 5½''. Contains (xxii), 270, + ii pp with 26 full-page single-sided monochrome plates and 58 figures in text. Hinges cracked, rubbing of the cloth across the spine ends and corners, bubbling of the cloth to the front board. SIGNED by the author to the front free end paper 'Presented by the author - Rev. H.
