About this Item
346pp. 8½" x 6" x 1½" tan vellum with faintly visible handlettered spine title, page green end papers, lacking the front endpaper; 348 pages including the Index; minor foxing and old water damage; rather charmingly the "O s" on the title page have been filled in with faces -- in a near contemporary hand.~~This book relates the tragic dispute in the late Middle Ages between two noble Sicilian families, the Perollo family, of Norman origin, and the de Luna family, of Aragonese origin. Beginning as a dispute over marriage alliances, the conflict developed into a nationalistic rivalry. In 1455 a public insult escalated into murder and much public destruction. In 1529 the well-established mutual hatred between the families erupted into violence again, culminating in the massacre of the Perollo family and many of their supporters in Sciacca. Giacomo Perollo managed to hide but was discovered, killed, and dragged through the streets by a horse. In an equally violent retaliation, Sigismund de Luna s castle in nearby Bivona was destroyed and its defenders massacred. The de Luna patriarch escaped, but failing to obtain a pardon, threw himself into the Tiber River. After the civil war, the population of Sciacca diminished significantly. ~~Little is known about the author. This book has many reprints and facsimiles, but this 18th century edition is uncommon. Good binding. Seller Inventory # 296258
